Week 3 DB 1-2
DB 1: Considering the
5 senses, after having learned about the brain's structure and function,
neurons (nerve cells), and the endocrine system,
1) How are these topics interrelated?
The topics are related because they carry signals to the
brain about what has just been touched, seen, smelled, tasted, or heard. The
brain then tells the body how to react, whether it would be to spit the nasty
food out, or to respond in a conversation; The brain needs the senses to tell
it how to react, and the senses need the brain to react to what has been sensed
by the body. This timeline of events that quickly happens within the body and
brain is called sensation. “Sensation occurs when special receptors in the
sense organs-the eyes, ears, nose, skin, and taste buds- are activated,
allowing various forms of outside stimuli to become neural signals in the
brain. This process of converting outside stimuli, such as light, into neural
activity is called transduction.”
2) What type of experiment are you developing? You may be brief here if you like, or submit
your developed experiment for suggestions and feedback from classmates. Remember, this lab experiment is a quiz
grade, so you are trying to show me what you know...use your resources
(including your colleagues).
DB2: Self check. Please note in the syllabus what the learning
focuses are for this course. Do you feel
you have succeeded in learning those topics thus covered? If not, how could you correct that? How could you ensure comprehension going
forward? (ie: do you pre-read or
"book walk" your chapters to see what you should learn before you try
to read? Do you take notes? Do you highlight? Do you review or study your notes after you
take them? Do you try any self tests or
additional material provided? etc) This answer may be as brief or developed as
you like. It will help each of us.
Under “Course Focus” the syllabus states: “Upon completion
of this course the student will possess a better understanding of human and
animal behavior and mental processes. The student will be able to apply this
knowledge in their everyday experience.”
I feel like I have learned a lot of new things, but also
have just been reminded of things I have already learned over the years. For
me, if I had a lot more time this semester, I have 4 other classes, I would sit
down and thoroughly read the book, chapter by chapter. But, since I do not
exactly have all the time in the world, I do not have that luxury. I think if I
would have been able to have the time for that, then I would get a lot more out
of the material. I’m not saying I don’t get to read it at all, just that I
don’t get to read it all into its full depth. Also, the section when we had to
tell about the brains parts, locations, and functions, I did find interesting.
But that might be because I am a future nursing student and I think that will
come in handy later on. As for taking notes, highlighting and reviewing those
notes, yes I do. If I didn’t, I don’t think I would be able to continue turning
in my assignments on time and to the full standard. As for the extra self-tests,
I have yet to try them out, again, due to the amount of time I do not have. But
if I have the time, I will check those out.
